About the event
‘Fort Donelson –A gallant fight’ is a day-long outing to Dover, Tennessee against the beautiful backdrop of the Cumberland River. From cavalry actions and siege operations to naval battles; Fort Donelson provides a unique array of military action during the War Between the States.
The group will take in the sites within the main fortress as we learn the strategic importance of the location.
We’ll descend to the shore batteries for a rare insight into the violent contest between iron ships and iron men as euphoric Southern cannoneers turn back the Union Navy in a storm of shot and shell.
We will break for lunch at 12:00 P.M. in the picnic area where we’ll share the bluff above the Cumberland with Bald Eagles that inhabit the area.
In the afternoon we’ll journey outside the Fort and focus on the Confederate breakout attempt on February the 15th.
